What the World Needs Now...

According to an article in the New York Times this week, what the world needs now is more handwritten cards and letters: We Could All Use a Little Snail Mail Right Now

Note_Writing_Gotham_2100px.jpg

The article expresses everything we feel as stationers! Handwriting is such a physical reminder of a person and email just can’t capture this. The average American household receives just 10 pieces of personal mail per year. This makes getting a note in the mail even more meaningful and taking the time to write and send a note feels good too.

The Times article also notes that David Sedaris, one of our favorite writers, sends handwritten thank you notes.

“I just feel like it’s classy to do it with real mail,” he said. “It’s too easy to do it on email. And it also doesn’t mean as much.” Not to mention, he added, “It’s nice to be thought of as classy.”

Our feelings exactly!

Warby Parker

We recently printed some letterpress greeting cards for one of our favorite companies, Warby Parker. We love their eyeglasses and sunglasses, so we were excited to collaborate with them on some note cards for their new Brooklyn location. Each set has 4 different designs, which feature really cute illustrations of New Yorkers with great eyewear by Joana Avillez. They're a really lovely set for anyone who enjoys sending and receiving snail mail.

Letterpress Collaboration with Mitsushige Nishiwaki

I started letterpress printing in 1999 and my interest at the time was to collaborate with artist friends to print editions. I wanted to use the medium to produce and share work that I found captivating. We have worked on many inspiring projects over the last fifteen years, translating great images into letterpress prints. When I saw the work of Mitsushige Nishiwaki, I felt immediately compelled to "share" his work, not just in the social media sharing sense.

Mitsushige Nishiwaki is an etching artist based in Tokyo.  We have corresponded over the years and I fell in love with his illustrations from a recent trip to New York City.  He draws the grandeur of the buildings, the charm of the shops (in great detail), a little street vendor grittiness along with coffee and donuts.  He captures the small and the big moments of life in NYC in a really special way.

Being based in Brooklyn and loving all of it's patisseries, we selected Nishiwaki's "Brooklyn Donut Shop" to reproduce as a limited edition print. We're publishing this as an edition of 40, letterpress printed on archival paper with watercolor hand coloring. We love the odd perspective and scale and the way this cheers up our kitchen in the morning.

We think art should be for display and for sharing so in tangent with this print, we're also introducing a set of New York City note cards. These are sold in sets of 8 (2 each of 4 designs). We hope people enjoy Mitsisghige Nishiwaki's work as much as we do and we look forward to sharing more collaborations in the upcoming year!

Important Notes for a Very Organized Life

One of our favorite new items is our set of 5 letterpress printed lists, designed to keep your desk and thoughts organized. These sheets are perfect for jotting down random, genius ideas, or great new restaurants you've been meaning to try. Pin them above your desk, or keep them by your bedside, to note bestselling books from the Sunday Times review, or must see movies.

This set is meant for the analog person who would rather write down notes on paper, than type into a phone. Constantly forgetting the million different passwords you have? We've got a sheet to keep that organized, too! These are perfect little, handmade gifts for the coming holidays and are available in our online shop now.

Oh la la: A Destination Wedding in the South of France

We love when we have the opportunity to letterpress print wedding invitations for creative couples. These wedding invitations were designed by the betrothed couple, Jennifer and James. The result was a very unique design, full of color and fun flourishes.

Jennifer and James fell in love with the South of France when they vacationed there together. From the delicious food to the warmth of the countryside, they knew that this was the perfect destination for their wedding. The event was held at an idyllic castle called Château de Lisse, no doubt the inspiration for many fairy tales. The week long event allowed their guests ample time to explore the South and the breathtaking grounds of the château.

It was a lot of fun to print wedding invitations in such vibrant and playful colors. The bright green and blue ink look were an amazing combination. The background of the invitation was a half-tone moon printed in perfect sky blue, with stars dotting the edges. The decorative frame  in vivid green added just the right amount of contrast.

They designed these great matching coasters for the reception, as well. We love that they lined the border with the coordinates of the château and topped it off with a very stylish ampersand.

We are envious of anyone who received these letterpress wedding invitations! We're sure it was the trip of a lifetime.

Downtown NYC Wedding Reception

We have more inspiration for NYC weddings today! We can't say enough about how fun it was to work on this set of stationery for a recent New York City wedding. The letterpress Save the Date postcard and invitation suite were lovely, but the accompanying pieces have been even more fun to print. This couple thought of everything, from unique welcome gifts with printed tags, to information about the venue (NYC's Housing Works) to our favorite, a mini guide to NYC amenities for the out of town guests staying in Tribeca.

Say thanks with bespoke letterpress stationery

We print many custom stationery sets during the holiday. They make wonderful gifts, perfect for sending out thank you notes, post-holiday. Here are a few we particularly enjoyed designing and printing in 2014. custom-classic-monogram-stationery-sesame-letterpress

These notecards feature an assortment of blues and grays, perfectly matching the cloudy January sky.

Initials always look great in letterpress, whether they are small and sleek or larger and more decorative. Adding an image is a great idea, especially if it's as cute as this carefree rabbit taking a leap over such a fancy monogram.

Eye Love You!

We're debuting a couple new greeting cards this year, in celebration of Valentine's Day! We love this playful card with a striking blue and gray eye. The message is simple and sweet. eye_love_valentine_card_sesame_letterpress

Nothing says I love you like a sweet, hand-written note and a really good box of chocolates. We've designed these red and gray cards with that thought in mind. The inspiration for this card, the Whitman's Sampler box, has been a Valentine's Day staple since 1912.

love_sweet_chocolate_box_valentine_card_sesame_letterpressWe encourage sending handwritten love notes all year long, but if there's one day a year to write to your paramour, this is it. These and more Valentine's Day cards are available on our website now!

2015 Sesame Letterpress Calendars

For the last four years, we've been letterpress printing our small boxed calendars and we think 2015 is our best, yet! Throughout the year, we set aside images that inspire us for our upcoming calendar and match them to the appropriate months. This new calendar features some of our favorites, such as the gray tea kettle in January, a turquoise March egg and a trio of bright April umbrellas. The set also includes a page to note your resolutions for the year. Whether you choose to display your resolutions with pride or keep them hidden (in case you fall back to your chocolate addiction) is up to you...

This year we added a second letterpress calendar to our collection. Inspired by a set of custom botanical coasters that we printed, this single sheet wall calendar features beautiful, vintage floral etchings. We kept it simple with rich, black ink on off-white butcher paper from French Paper Co. for an antique inspired design. We added a single line of gold foil type because we just couldn't resist a bit of shimmer this time of year.

Both calendars are available on our website shop. If you're looking for a sweet, last minute gift, we can wrap and send them directly to your loved ones.

Thanksgiving Gatherings and Gifts

Are you ready for some turkey? (We're ashamed to say that was sung to the tune of the Monday night football theme.) We're not sure how it happened, but Thanksgiving is only days away. Between pouring over recipes on the internet and cooking up some truly delicious letterpress goods, we haven't had time to figure out what we're bringing to dinner this year! If you're hosting Thanksgiving this year, send your guests home with cute homemade doggy bags, filled with a leftover turkey sandwich and a piece of pumpkin pie. You'll gain some space in your fridge, and your guests will go home happy!

Provisions by Food52 is a great resource for unique products for your home. If you're heading to a friend's home for your Thanksgiving festivities, nothing says thanks for the stuffing like this handmade porcelain pitcher. Or show your appreciation with this adorable whisk necklace or a set of our letterpress holiday coasters.

Maybe you're hosting this year and are trying to put together the perfect table setting. Try having your guests write down what they're thankful for on one of our letterpress tags and share their thoughts during dessert. They also come in handy at the table as place cards. It's a lovely, personalized touch for planning your seating at dinner.

This year, we're making an effort to buy our holiday gifts from small, local businesses. It just feels better to purchase something from a business in your community than a big box store. We'll be celebrating Small Business Saturday from Thanksgiving to Sunday, the 30th. Get a 10% discount of your entire order from our website using the code SBS2014.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
