In the Studio

We share a lot of photos of the stationery we're printing so for a change, we've decided to step back and show some pictures of our studio and printing presses.

We do all of our own letterpress printing here in the Brooklyn studio. Doing this ourselves allows us to really pay attention to each piece that passes through the press and be certain that it matches the design we've created. It is important to us that our stationery is perfect as it has to represent the people who will be writing on and sending it. Having control in the printing helps us ensure this.

Plus, we like making things and it’s immensely satisfying to start the day with stacks of blank paper and finish it with stacks of beautiful stationery!

Tools of the trade

We are totally obsessed with all things letterpress (obviously!). We adore the delicate, beautifully detailed, elegant invitations and stationery pieces that we print, one-by-one, by hand, in our studio. So isn't it an amazing juxtaposition to see the rough tools used to produce this work? We are constantly grateful for our big, cumbersome, yet perfectly calibrated presses. Here are a few pics that are a little different from our usual product shots:

Bags Of Mystery...

Each year, we take part in the Dumbo Arts Festival and we sell off lots of our stock at great prices. Our "Bags of Mystery" are always really popular: sandwich bags filled with a whole range of stationery - you don't know what you've got until you buy it and open it up!

This year, we have had loads of comments about the bags themselves so we are printing up a very limited edition for purchase! Here are some photos of Naho printing them on our Vandercook printing press...

Studio Video

We had a really sweet journalism student, Alejandra Russi, visit us in the Spring as part of a video profile project she was working on for a class. Here is a link to the little video she shot at the studio: http://vimeo.com/41868638 Alejandra took some beautiful photos of the studio too and sent them for us to share on our blog. It's cool to see what catches someone's eye when they come to the studio for the first time. I love the still life pictures of tools!

Our Brooklyn Letterpress Studio...

Our studio is located in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY right under the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge. During the 12 years we've been here, the neighborhood has gone from something out of a gangster movie "disposal" site to something more along the lines of SoHo.

Our studio filled with Victorian Era presses has been a steady mix of old cast iron machines, crisp white papers and bright inks. Add the smells of solvents and coffee and some NPR or old French music... and the photos below... and you can imagine a little slice of our days in the studio.
